Eriskay is a small island nestled between the larger islands of Barra to the south and The Uists to the north. It is connected to South Uist by a causeway opened by the Duke and Countess of Wessex Prince Edward and Sophie in 2001.

Eriskay takes its name from the Old Norse for ‘Eric’s Isle’. It is a land of beautiful beaches, fantastic scenery and peace and tranquillity.

Eriskay is famous in history for being the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie made his first foray into Scotland in 1745. The privateer Du Teillay landed the Prince with his seven men of Moidart to start the Forty-Five Jacobite rising. This story gives rise to another anomaly as Sea Bindweed which is not native to the Hebrides grows on the island. Legend has it the Prince dropped the seeds when he pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket.

Another claim to fame was the running aground of the WWII ship the SS Politician in 1941 with a cargo of whisky and other luxury goods. This was made famous by the Compton McKenzie book and later film Whisky Galore. The island is also home to the famous Eriskay Pony.

Within a 20 minute drive to the neighbouring island of South Uist is the home of Askernish Golf Club.  In 1891 at the request of Lady Cathcart  the Golf Club was created by the famous architect Old Tom Morris.  It has recently been restored to its former glory and is now ranked in the top 100 Links courses of great Britain and Ireland.

Many of the families from Eriskay were forced to leave the island in search of work. Some of the historic island families have few or no descendants left on the island today.  But for us this is where our story begins……….
